ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF EQUESTRIAN ARTS

& Maria E Smith

UofEA content is designed to help people build beautiful partnerships with their horses by understanding the "truths" of the way horses naturally think, learn, and use their bodies.

By taking on the role of our horse's "teacher" and building skills in a logical order, success happens quickly as our horses actively participate in their own training progress.

About Maria Smith

Maria Smith is a passionate equestrian coach and horse trainer who focuses on the art and science of horsemanship, rather than any specific horse sport.

Even though she started her 35 year career in the competition arena, Maria has always been more interested in the challenge of solving problems, developing young horses to maximize their potential, and the pursuit of technical excellence and harmony in all horsemanship.

This lead her to spend her career sorting out the truths of horsemanship from tradition, sports rule books, and outdated information.  She focuses on the universal principles of training that help EVERY horse and rider, as well as the science behind horsemanship.

The goal of University of Equestrian Arts is to sift through decades of Maria's own learning and research to give you the information and solutions that will help you achieve your goals and dreams with your horse.  These solutions are offered through Live Clinics & Workshops and Online Courses.

UofEA HORSEMANSHIP VALUES

HONOR the Nature of Horses

We choose training methods that respect the natural instincts and the survival needs of horses.  And to do this, we include equine behavior and psychology as a regular part of our training.  We also embrace the ideals of keeping horses as naturally as our individual circumstances will allow.

Do No Harm

We choose training techniques and exercises that help our horses to feel balanced, free, and empowered in their bodies.  Our goal is always to leave our horse better than we found them, and we strictly avoid methods that cause pain, tension, and unnatural movement that would tear down their bodies.

RELAXATION IS FASTER

All of our training is built on a foundation of trust & connection, because without relaxation there is no healthy movement, learning, problem solving, or remembering new information. It is NOT faster to force a horse.  People spend years fighting to force horses into postures and movements that could be accomplished in a few days through relaxation, understanding, and psychology.

PRESERVING CHOICE IN TRAINING

We avoid taking away the horse's ability to make decisions about how they use their own body. Training with mechanical force only results in submission for survival, not cooperation.  Instead, we set our horses up to learn by trial and error through both positive and negative feedback from us.  Because they are in control of their experience, they master skills with understanding and develop a sense of responsibility. This is the way all mammals are wired to learn, and this is self-carriage.
